SUMMARY:Cochineal Pigment Painting
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the fascinating world of natural color at this hands-on Cochineal Pigment Painting workshop. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Ancient Landscapes of South Texas - Hiding in Plain Sight
DESCRIPTION:What an honor! We’re going to be joined in-store by wonderful educators from UTRGV’s Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) Program. They’re going to introduce their fascinating short documentary film exploring the natural landscapes of our Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV). Much of its remarkable history is “hiding in plain sight”: ancient beaches and drowned shorelines\, evidence of a large volcanic eruption that changed Earth’s climate\, shifting sand\, giant oysters and mammoths\, petrified forests and thousand-year-old living trees\, tiny zircon crystals\, and a mighty river. This landscape shaped the lives of the Valley’s earliest humans\, and we’re reshaping the landscape and its ecosystems today.\n• Refreshments provided.\n• Book signing after the film. (The companion book will be available for sale.)\n• PLUS\, stay after for a NATIVE PLANT SALE!\nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS\nThe CHAPS Program at UTRGV is a consortium of anthropologists and archaeologists\, biologists\, historians\, geologists\, and geoarchaeologists who embrace a locally focused\, place-based STEAM research approach (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts\, and Mathematics) to tell the story of a largely unknown region of the United States and make it accessible to K–17 educators\, the public\, and scholars\, with bilingual maps\, books\, exhibits\, films\, traveling trunks\, and scholarly publications. The efforts of the CHAPS Program have been recognized locally\, nationally\, and internationally.\nThe team that developed\, produced and directed this film includes:\n• Gerardo “Bull” Sanchez—Film Director\n• Juan L. González—Professor of Geology for UTRGV College of Science\, School of Earth\, Environmental\, and Marine Sciences (SEEMS); CHAPS Program Co-Director; documentary film executive producer.\n• Christopher L. Miller—Professor of History for UTRGV College of Liberal Arts; CHAPS Program Associate Director; documentary film associate producer.\n• Russell K. Skowronek—Professor of History and Anthropology for UTRGV College of Liberal Arts; CHAPS Program Director; documentary film associate producer.\n• Roseann Bacha-Garza—Lecturer II Anthropology for College of Liberal Arts; CHAPS Program Manager; documentary film associate producer.

SUMMARY:Thornforest Based Solutions: A Deep Dive into South Texas Ecology
DESCRIPTION:The Tamaulipan thorn forest is one of the Valley’s most endangered ecosystems—rich in biodiversity\, yet still largely misunderstood. Dr. Christoffersen\, a professor at UTRGV and long-time researcher of this unique habitat\, will take guests on a journey into the inner workings of these forests. Drawing from years of long-term studies\, he will share new insights into how thorn forests grow\, adapt\, and recover—and how these lessons can help guide meaningful restoration efforts.\nDr. Christoffersen’s research is rooted in a transdisciplinary approach\, blending ecological theory with hands-on fieldwork\, experimental restoration\, and data modeling. Whether through measuring seedling growth\, monitoring climate responses\, or experimenting with revegetation strategies\, his team’s work aims to bring both science and hope to one of South Texas’s most fragile landscapes.

SUMMARY:What Happens After Pollination: An evening with Mike Heep
DESCRIPTION:Mike Heep has been at the heart of native plant conservation in the Rio Grande Valley since the 1980s. At his nursery in Harlingen\, Mike and his family have grown countless native species that now thrive in gardens\, parks\, and wild spaces across South Texas. With a background in Botany\, Horticulture\, and Chemistry\, Mike blends science and humor into talks that both educate and entertain.\nIn “What Happens After Pollination\,” Mike explores the fascinating processes that take place in flowering plants once pollination occurs. From fertilization to seed formation\, the presentation uncovers the intricate steps plants take to ensure the next generation. And true to Mike’s style\, you can expect plenty of humorous tangents and unexpected facts along the way.
